As the 3 day advanced route, but Great Heywood is easily achievable, with perhaps a day at Shugborough Hall, the seat of Lord Lichfield.
The surrounding countryside offers some excellent rambling options. Milford, a little further on is a delightful village, which offers the opportunity to cross Tixall wide, a broad section of canal and then Brindleys Aqueduct over the River Sow. Winding can be undertaken at Milford Bridge.
Those travelling south on the Coventry might want to spend a day at Drayton Manor Park. Alternatively head east through to Alvecote and explore the remains of the Benedictine Priory there. Winding can be undertaken at Alvecote.
Advanced crews, cruising the Soar, can continue onto the Grand Union and reach the enchanting town of Market Harborough, a few miles along its own dedicated arm. See the famous Foxton locks and the inclined plane, now under restoration.
